Sit Bones Width Measurement: More Important Than You Think
You've probably come across the term "saddle width" when contemplating how to choose a new bike saddle from the standard offerings in cycling shops. It's a dimension that affects the saddle width you need.
Opt for a saddle too narrow, and you might end up feeling like you're sitting on a razor blade. On the other hand, a saddle that's too wide can lead to discomfort, chafing, and pressure points. Finding the right saddle width can be quite a puzzle unless you can measure the distance between your sit bones down to the tenth of a millimeter like we can.
In collaboration with top bike fitters and experts from the Czech Technical University (CVUT), we have developed a unique and precise measurement method based on photogrammetry. It's the same technology geographers use for long-distance surveying of the Earth. Yes, they map hemispheres, while we map bums.
How Sit Bones Measurement Works
For our customers, it's a very simple process that takes only a few minutes. Once you've placed an order for Joyseat, we'll promptly send you the Smiling Butt Kit (the measurement set) by mail. All you have to do is wear tight-fitting underwear, sit on the foam pad, and leave an imprint of your butt in the permanent foam (we recommend reading the detailed instructions first). This will create two holes that might be different depths—no worries. You'll then take nine photos of these two impressions from various angles (precise instructions are on the box or in this user guide), upload them to the configurator on our website, and that's it! Your butt-measuring job is done.
Now comes the special AI-powered JoyFit Algorithm. It meticulously analyzes your 2D photographs, locates the lowest points in the imprints, and calculates the exact distance between your sit bones. This parameter serves as the basis for designing each custom Joyseat. The algorithm also considers the data you provided in the configurator (more about that here) and generates a 3D model of your personalized saddle.
From 3D Model to 3D-Printed Bike Saddle
Our experts in parametric design thoroughly check the model before sending it to the industrial 3D printer. A few hours later, the upper flexible structure of your unique saddle, complete with your signature, is born. But that's not the end of the process; there are several post-production steps to go through.
First, the upper part undergoes manual cleaning and then vapor smoothing to seal the surface pores and prevent it from acting like a sponge and soaking up water. After that, it's time for coloring.
While the 3D printer works on the upper part in Germany, the manufacturing experts in Varnsdorf, Czechia, hand-prepare the saddle's shell and rails. We then assemble the saddle, pack it up, and send it directly to you.
The Best Women's Bike Saddle Is... Joyseat!
We know how common it is for conventional bike saddles to cause problems, especially for female cyclists. Most "women's" bike saddles tend to be wide gel seats that may seem comfortable at first, just like sinking into a plush sofa. However, the reality is often different. Gel bike saddles fail to provide adequate support to your sit bones in the long run and instead, create unwanted pressure on soft tissues.
In contrast, Joyseat is crafted and tailored-made to individual needs. We can perfectly measure the distance between sit bones to create a saddle specifically shaped for you, while also producing different parts of the saddle in different stiffnesses. This ensures proper support where you need it and provides softness and comfort for your sensitive areas.
Unique Measurement Technology
The development of our precise sit bone measurement method took more than a year. Our goal was to design a process that would be highly accurate for us and yet as comfortable as possible for you. So, you don't need to send the measurement kit back; you can hang it wherever you park your beloved bike or perhaps even create something creative with the foam. We trust you'll come up with something!
