Recommended Clamps and Seatposts for Joyseat Saddle Carbon Rails
Seat rails and seatpost clamps aren't always perfectly compatible. In the realm of cycling saddles, there are two standard rail sizes: 7x7 (round) and 7x9 (oval), along with several different seatpost clamp designs. Therefore, one of the most common questions we receive is, "Will my Joyseat fit my seatpost?" Joyseat is equipped with the typical oval carbon rails (7x9). Let's explore how you can easily determine if it will be compatible with your clamp.
The issue can be a bit complex, but if we simplify it greatly, take a look at the orientation of the seatpost clamp screws (the clamp is the part where the rails are secured) – if they are perpendicular to the ground, you have no problem. If they are horizontal, your situation might be a bit more complicated. How can you resolve this? You'll find out in the following paragraphs.
First Type of Clamp: Universal and Compatible
The first type of clamp – which clamps the rails from top to bottom – is tightened using one or two vertically positioned screws. This type of clamp is very versatile, and it's no problem to attach saddles with round, steel, or titanium rails, as well as saddles with oval carbon rails (both 7x9 and the non-standard 7x10 size that some manufacturers use). We appreciate this type of seatpost clamp for its simplicity.
Second Type of Clamp: Specifically for Round or Oval Rails
The second type of clamp – which clamps the rails from the sides – is a bit more complex. It typically consists of multiple components, and the saddle rails are clamped by jaw-shaped clamps, usually with one horizontally positioned screw.
For seatposts of this type, manufacturers usually offer interchangeable jaw pieces for round and oval rails. If you acquired your saddle as an "aftermarket" purchase, you most likely have both types of jaws available and can easily switch them out. However, if you bought a bike with this type of seatpost as original equipment and the catalog specification included a saddle with round rails, you probably only have clamps for round rails at home, and you will need to purchase clamps for oval rails separately. There are also unfortunate cases where the manufacturer no longer offers clamps for atypical seatposts (older bike models, discontinued designs, etc.). In such instances, the simplest solution may be to get a new seatpost that allows for the installation of oval rails.
Third Type of Clamp: Specifically for Round or Oval Rails
The third type of clamp is essentially a hybrid of the first two types. The rails are clamped from top to bottom using "stones," and tightening is done with one or two horizontal screws. It can be said that the same rule applies here as with the previous type, meaning the stones are always compatible with only one type of rail. If you want to switch to the other type, you'll need to replace the mentioned stones (for example, in the case of ENVE and Cinelli seatposts).
